If the 2012 Hyundai Veloster made its world premiere at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show gave him a shadow lurking on stage. From every angle and every time there was the hovering spirit of the old Honda CRX around him. The Veloster is small, like the CRX. It’s a hatchback style, like the CRX. It’s like the sporty CRX got. And it is full of first time buyers, like the CRX is. It is the second coming of the CRX, is not it?
Well, this is not like the two door, two seater CRX. So maybe the Veloster is not only a CRX, after all. And Hyundai is not perhaps take place in the hearts of fans from the CRX. Perhaps the Veloster Hyundai is really something new.
The Veloster trips on the same platform as the Hyundai Elantra sedan. It’s not quite the same on the outside, but the wheelbase is 2 inches cut and cut another total of 10.2 inches front and rear overhangs. But just because more than a foot shorter than the Elantra as a whole and nearly 8 inches shorter than a 2011 Scion tC, which is not mine, it is small by historical standards, the CRX is.
Since the Veloster is based on the Elantra, it’s no wonder that the suspension design is the same. That is, a pair of MacPherson struts in front and a torsion beam (Hyundai calls it a “V-beam axis) in the back. Not exactly the stuff of legend here. There is a 24mm anti-roll bars front (the Elantra makes Using a 23mm bar) and a 23mm rear bar (see the Elantra with a rear bar). Of course, the shock absorbers and springs are returning to work with the Veloster dimensions and tires.
Interestingly, the Veloster Hyundai steering slowed a bit from what’s in the Elantra. While both electric rack-supported systems, the Veloster is a ratio of 15.6:1 for the Elantra is a 14.2:1 steering rack.
The Veloster’s engine is 77mm with a relatively long cylinder bore 85.4mm stroke crank for a total of 1,591 cubic centimeters. The 138 horsepower is rated at 6,300 rpm, but the long stroke means maximum torque is at a more modest (but still screaming) 4850 rev / min it would be great if more than 123 pounds feet of Twist is available at this point, but that’s what you get.
In contrast, provides the standard 1.8-liter engine in the Elantra does not directly, but almost every other feature of the Veloster is 1.6. It is at least 148 hp at 6,500 rpm and 131 lb-ft of torque at 4,700 rpm / min
The Veloster only six-speed manual transmission are offered: either a manual or an all-new Hyundai-built dual-clutch transmission (DCT) automatically.
Fifth and sixth overdrive gears in both ratios. However, the lower the manual overdrive 0.688:1 sixth with his passage to the top of the DCT’s cog ratio is 0.743:1 compared. Part of it is in the final drive gear sets, where the manual introduces a 4.26:1 final drive ratio and the void DCT taken on a very short 4.81:1.
Set to go on sale around July in three different configurations, the Veloster Korean made somewhere between $ 17K and $ 18K and in the low $ 20K range with each option of the dealer, you can start talking add.
Well, as I said, a turbo version is probably in the works. Hopefully a more sophisticated rear suspension part of the package, too. Expect the aftermarket to jump in full force too. It’s enough to make even the spirit of the CRX only hope to make.
